Kill Devil Hills, NC -- L'Tanya Murray, current assistant principal at First Flight Middle School, has been named the new principal of the Dare Learning Academy (DLA). Earlier this year, Dr. Farrelly announced significant changes to the structure and vision of the alternative program, ultimately announcing the creation of DLA. Intended to provide students with additional resources and supports, DLA is an innovative approach to support at-risk students.

Murray brings a wealth of experience to the role, having worked as a school social worker and administrator. After being selected as the first candidate from Dare County to participate in the North Carolina Teaching Fellows program, Murray attended UNCG and graduated with a degree in teaching and with honors. She then worked in Guilford County Schools as a social worker and eventually found her way back home to Dare. In 2004, she was selected to participate in the Dare County Schools administrative cohort program and graduated from East Carolina University with a degree in school administration. Murray is excited about the transition but has enjoyed working with the First Flight community of students, teachers and parents. She will begin her new role on January 2.
